We’re almost at a loss for words to describe the aroma in the house when this sauce is in the works. Like any good pasta sauce, this one takes time and quality ingredients but we promise, it’s worth the wait.
What’s beautiful about this sauce is that it’s set-it-and-practically-forget-it in the slow cooker, made even easier with the convenience of a can of Werling’s original pork sausage. The flavor will meld with the vegetables and sauce and we bet you’ll be back for more. Plus, it freezes beautifully, making it great to make and store for later. Mangia!
Slow-Cooker Italian Sausage Pasta Sauce
Prep time: 10 mins
Cook time: 8 hours on low; 4 hours on high
This slow cooker sausage pasta sauce recipe is a quick and easy way to get a homemade dinner on the table with minimal hands-on time! Don’t forget the Parmesan and crushed red pepper! Based on a recipe by Nora Rušev
1 14.5-ounce can Werling and Sons Pork Sausage
3 celery sticks, chopped
1 cup diced carrots
1 shallot, chopped
4 cloves garlic, either diced, sliced or crushed
1 tablespoon cold-pressed olive oil
2 14.5oz cans diced tomato
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
Salt, pepper and Italian herbs to taste
1 cup peas, thawed from frozen
Everything but the peas goes into the slow cooker to start. Give the blend a thorough stir to make sure the ingredients are well mixed, and set the cook time for eight hours on low or four hours on high. Once that’s completed, remove the lid and breathe in that aroma while the sauce cooks down and thickens to the consistency you like – usually 10 to 15 minutes. Once it’s right where you want it, finish the sauce off by stirring in the thawed peas and serve over your favorite hot pasta. Bon appétit!
